Actually the 1st of January is not a good time to be travelling in Japan because almost everything will be closed, even most shops and restaurants in Tokyo! Although everything will be closed, like restaurants, I reckon that there might be many people visiting the shrines and temples on Koya-san on the 1st. So, it is hard to say. It might be inconvenient for travelling purposes.

The New Year's holiday is the one time of the year when most people can take a long holiday in Japan and therefore some shops may be closed for the week before or following the 1st of January.

Ernest Ngaihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08786475598397508102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19139900.post-33971480961105332252017-10-08T00:26:40.187-07:002017-10-08T00:26:40.187-07:00Hi, I came across your blog about Koyasan on New Y...Hi, I came across your blog about Koyasan on New Year's Day. We have been to Koyasan before back in November 2012. We are going to Japan again and will be in Osaka on the 30th December and make our way to Takayama on the 3rd January 2018. I am undecided whether to go to Koyasan on the 1st January as everywhere else will be shut on New Year's Day. In your opinion, is it worth going there on the 1st? You also mentioned that it was pretty much like a dead town when you arrived. Did you see any restaurants open at all?

Many thanks

SabrinaAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17901186755942551635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19139900.post-37220076485742051012017-06-13T15:48:35.415-07:002017-06-13T15:48:35.415-07:00Hi I'm in Abashiri now. In fact, I'm not even making a trip to sheiretoko which is world famous. Hence, I'm just doing nothing very much in this (depressing) town. Since you didn't go hiking and see the falls or go during the peak season of Kouyou (fall leaf viewing) I think you missed some of the attraction of the area.

You really should have read some Japanese History before going to the Shrines!
Tokugawa Ieyasu was in no way the 1st Shogun of Japan. There were many Shoguns through many eras for over 1000 years in Japan! He was the one who united the country and ended the feudal period of constant warfare between feudal lords however, so in this respect he is very revered in Japan because his wise ruling brought peace for hundreds of years to Japan. He was the first of the Tokugawa Shoguns who ruled until the Modernization of Japan when the Emperor (Meiji) retook control of the country from the Samurai in the late 1800s - some of that history is shown in the movie (The Last Samurai)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15593210690688616332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19139900.post-87335672739382182062016-09-12T09:00:47.022-07:002016-09-12T09:00:47.022-07:00Hi Fred,

There are no problems with walking or biking home at night even at 12 am.

The university is not located in an actual city, per se, but in a suburban environment full of strip malls and big box stores. If you want to go to the actual Hiroshima city, you have to take a train for 30~ minutes or a bus for 50~ minutes.

With regards to bikes, they are expensive and lousy in Japan. A 3 speed bike costs at least 11,500 yen and all of them rusts easily.

It makes more sense to just buy a 2nd hand bike because the extreme weather (hot and humid in the summer and freezing cold in the winter) will damage the bike.

Ernest Ngaihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08786475598397508102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19139900.post-23563566820268814252012-12-27T23:42:33.082-08:002012-12-27T23:42:33.082-08:00Thank you very much!.
