US East Coast Day 2: New York City: Statue of Liberty, Financial District, Chinatown
On Jan. 13, 08 I started my first day exploring New York City. I stayed with my friend's family in Brooklyn so I went around sightseeing with my friend.
The first thing we did was buy a Metrocard for transit. The 7 day pass for $24 allowed unlimited access to buses and subway trains. Although we didn't really get our money's worth (one ride on the subway cost $2 no matter how far you go), it was better than fumbling around with change.
New York City Subway:
First stop was going to the Statue of Liberty, you had to book a reservation to just enter the base of the statue. Most tourists we saw didn't have a reservation so they only could see the statue on the island but now allowed to *enter it*.
Security was also really strict as in addition to going through metal detectors and taking on and off our shoes before we boarded the ferry, we have to go to an "air puffer" machine made by General Electric that sprays air to your body to detect chemical explosives...
From the ferry:
The giant tent were all the security measures took place:
Sailing towards Liberty Island (where the Statue of Liberty is located) with the skyline of the Financial District in the background:
Brooklyn Bridge:
The statue:
Inside the base of the statue, there is a museum describing how the statue was built:
Looking up the statue, since 9/11 people are not allowed to go all the way to the top anymore. Official response is that access to the top does not meeting "safety/building code":
Skyline from the base of the statue:
Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that connects Brooklyn to Staten Island:

Going further down:

Back towards the financial district, the Korean War Memorial:
Staten Island Ferry Terminal (the ferry is free):
There was some free play put together by some Australian group and they had chairs set up inside the terminal and only the audience with the headphones would know what was going on because the "stage" took place inside the terminal waiting area:
Modern subway station entrance:
"Canyon of Heroes", supposed to be where the ticker-tape parades are held:
New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street:
Wall Street:
Federal Hall on Wall Street where Washington was first sworn in as President:
Some building near the "Ground Zero" site:
"Ground Zero" site, now a giant construction site:

Chinatown:
What remains of "Little Italy" before it is swallowed by Chinatown:
Inside Grand Central Terminal:
Exterior of Grand Central Terminal:
Near Times Square (the cops with the horses seem to be there all the time, they were there the next time we passed by..):
