I visited Fukuoka, Japan on April 3, 2006:
Spring, in Japan the season of new beginnings, this is probably a new hire orientation.
I was so bored that I had to take pictures of a shopping mall, which is called "Canal City". Here is the description:
Canal City Hakata is a large shopping and entertainment complex, calling itself a "city within the city". Attractions include numerous shops, cafes, restaurants, a theater, game center, cinemas, two hotels and a canal, which runs through the complex. (Courtesy of japan-guide.com)
Outside of Canal City:
Hanami (Cherry Blossom viewing) season, here we see people reserving their places:

Inside the Temple/Shrine complex:
Interesting looking parking lot:

On the train to Kumamoto:
Review of Fukuoka from the point of the tourist:
Pros:
- Not crowded
- Air is pretty clean
Cons
- A half day trip is enough
- Not much to see
- "Canal City" no matter how "unique" it looks is just another mall
Recommendation: Not worth visiting, if you want to visit to just say you have "been there", half a day is enough

From the pictures I definitely see how it could be a boring place. There certainly isn't much activity on the streets too. I do like the parking lot picture though.
